Presentation on sonic effect:

Every week one student will present one word taken from Sonic Experience, A Guide to Everyday Sounds edited by Jean François Augoyard and Henry Torgue.

These individual presentations aimed at the understanding of keywords, their possible ramifications with other notions that have or will be addressed in class. Students should also provide one or several audio examples of these effects (maybe from their log book) and/or examples of how these sonic effects have been used or rendered by artists.
Presentations should not be a reading of the book. It only serves as a guide for reflection, and you may focus on particular aspect that you think relevant.
These presentations, should be short (around 15 minutes), so students might have to carefully select what they want to present, as sometimes one of these words might gave several possible orientations.
It is also possible to use the Handbook for Acoustic Ecology as another possible reference. The CD version is available in the Library and it also accessible directly on the web (refer to online references). Barry Truax’ works is very helpful for all acoustical terms. Sonic Experience, A Guide to Everyday Sounds give another point of view and both references might be useful.
The presentations count for 10% in the final grade.

Collage study: assonance / difference

Using the material recorded in the group source recording session, create a 5 minute stereo sound collage, exploring the theme of assonance and difference. You should approach the study using the Schaefferian listening strategy of reduced listening. Selected your sounds for their sonic assonance and difference. Through a process of theme and variations explore compositionally, different configurations to demonstrate a spectrum of relationships.

Be prepared to present the work and discuss your approach in class on the 31st October. You are also required to submit the work on CD.

Final project:

Create a sonic art work that artistically, technically and critically explores an approach (or approaches) to sonic arts practice that have been discussed in class.

You will be required to present the completed work in class at the end of the semester. Please submit your final work on CD (or if multi-channel on DVD). Accompanying your work you should include a 2000 word commentary that explains the decisions you have made in the devising of your work, and demonstrates and elaborates on your research into pertinent theory and practice.

*For 17th October please write a 200 word proposal for your project and be prepared to discuss this in class. This may be speculative rather than definitive. This should include a time line and specification on resources and skills required to realise the project.
