Counterparts is a cross-disciplinary performance about Nature, Life and Time. The performance is composed of six plots: the Big Bang, early development of the Universe and birth of life, harmony with nature, disorder, parallel universes and back to the start. A modern ballet dancer performs with the accompaniment of live classical music Goldberg's Variations by J.S. Bach and live DJ of nature sounds, including NASA space sound, bat sonar, whale songs and ocean storm. A number of state-of-the-art sensing devices, including the Microsoft Kinect Sensor (3D reconstruction), Wii Balance Board (force sensing) and Wiimote (arm motion sensing), are exploited to capture the motion and three-dimensional shape of the modern ballet dancer, and to interactively generate immersive visual and audio effects. The motion sensors embedded on the dancer's body are also used to trigger the lightning effect and control the surround sound.
