BIMS (Bio-Inspired Morphing Sculpture)

by Prof. James Gimzewski (concept), Silvia Rigon (scultpure) and Miu Ling Lam (technical)

BIMS is a biomorphic kinetic sculpture. We challenge most existing robotic actuators that have non-flexible links and use only rotational or prismatic joints to achieve limited degree of freedom. On the contrary, BIMS has a soft, formless and inflatable body made with polymer that can morph to variable shapes. BIMS is interactive to people's reaction - a microcontroller is used to do motion detection and control an air compressor for inflating the BIMS sculpture. BIMS has been exhibited in Shanghai International Science and Art Exhibition and won the Best Application Achievement Award.
