Critical Intermedia Laboratory Curriculum's 6 core values
We recognize that new media technologies often cut across existing disciplinary boundaries and artistic formats.
The word “game” is broadly understood as the design of rule-based systems where players must compete with one another or struggle to overcome obstacles. Students will explore both practical and conceptual issues in play art and game design. Students and faculty’s exploration of the future of digital art will centre around:
• The design of rule-based or constraint-based systems;
• The experimental discovery of new possibilities;
• The study of systems that encourage goal-based and strategic action; and
• The design of active user experience.
The studio maintains a strong connection to the histories of contemporary art, especially those tendencies that emphasize playfulness, conceptual examination, and technological exploration.
Theoretical and creative work should be grounded in an in-depth knowledge of media technology.
• Conceptually - philosophical and social aspects of technology;
• Artistically - the possibilities and limitations of technology in relation to contemporary art.
• We emphasize the flexible employment of knowledge from different disciplines in art-making, that critical enquiry and art-making can be combined.
• We regard art-making as a process of discovery, a series of experiments that stretch our perception and cognition.
• We emphasize the importance of research as 'being there' and in connection with the people and the world, and the respect of expertise knowledge to broaden our horizon.
