Critical Intermedia Laboratory Curriculum's 5 core studio areas
Main studio areas:
The CIL emphasizes a conceptual and experimental approach to creative work, informed by philosophy, narrative studies, cultural studies and historical understanding, to achieve in-depth exploration of new media technologies.
blue = core course / light red = studio electives /*Some courses may appear in more than one category.
Generative and code-based arts; non-linear interactive narratives; computational cinema; code-based performance; electronics as added capability for installation and performance; word games etc.
[*1204-Fundamentals of Programming][*2220-Generative Art & Literature][2205-Computational Cinema][2236-Network based media][2242-Music Technology][2256-Kinetic and Interactive Typography][*2258-Creative Electronics][2263-Subversive Computing and Tactical Media][2607-Games/Interactivity Fundamentals][3120-Game-level Design][3123-Image Processing and AugmentedReality Applications][3137-Network Art and Collaborative Creativity][3140-Software Art][4142-Philosophy and History of Computation]
Theoretical and creative work should be grounded in an in-depth knowledge of media technology. Art, game and film theories, plus sound technical competence in the use of various digital tools -- from photography, video to code-writing -- would enable students to freely deploy such skills and concepts in a broad range of contemporary art practices, such as installation, book-making, performance, experimental videography, and action research.
[*2202-Micro narratives][2204-Cultures of mediated perception][*2220-Generative Art & Literature][2227-Art administration & curatorial practice][2259-Game & play studies][2261-Installation Workshop][2264-User research][2273-Art criticism][3127-Cognition and The Arts][3130-Sound Installation and Sound Spatialization][*3149-Information, communication and contemporary art][4143-Sonic Arts and the History of Sounds and Noises]
Students will be encouraged to reflect on the conditions, possibilities, and limitations of their practice, and its relation to the tradition of contemporary art. Students will also explore new media theory, particularly about play and game, generative and code-based art, expanded (future) media, new narrative forms, and digital technologies. Critical and creative assignments are also integrated with the broader agenda in cultural studies, as well as ethno-methodologies as the prime investigative paradigm.
[2264-User research][2259-Game & play studies][*3125-Critical Theory for Society][3138-Creative city & urban critique][4134-Visual ethnography & creative intervention][2273-Art criticism][3112-Cultures & Identities][*3149-Information, communication and contemporary art]
This pertains to works that bring together all three areas in the form of practical projects and other activities. Integration should take place all across the curriculum, but there are specific courses designed to promote student integration through participation in festivals, exhibitions, social actions, or the production of an art work.
Two core courses encourage students to manage and experience 'integration' of the many aspects they learn in the CIL curriculum: sm4146 Digital Portfolio & Practicum (with a compulsory internship component); sm4140 Graduation Thesis (self-managed Final Year Project + a revised digital portfolio)
Co-curricular action projects: Study tour in Europe (2-week long) with an art-writing component; exhibitions and student showcase; workshops to enhance programming skills (e.g. Wordpress for personalization, Java for sound); workshops to enhance artistic practice (e.g. how to frame and mount photographs; the art of display in the museum and gallery space)
