A Gatsby tALE

|
Developed by: Zhou Jia (Jazz)
SIG: SIGAni+Vfx - Animation + Visual Effects
Year: 2010
Description:Jazz Zhou Jia, a Year Two student from the school of creative media, won three prizes at the Gatsby CM Awards 2009, organised by Japanese hair product brand Mandom.
She claimed the Gatsby Technical Award (15/30-second commercials), the Jury's Special Award and the Mandom Award for her computer animation A Gatsby tALE, which features a girl's long hair merging with a tree to heighten her feminine appeal.
She impressed the adjudicators with her creativity and graphic techniques. The commercial lasts just 30 seconds, but Zhou drew more than 700 sketches to create it.
"I often practise 3-D animation at CityU. But I decided to use 2-D animation, another favourite technique of mine, for this competition. I hoped a different medium would spark more creative ideas," she said.
The competition attracted more than 250 entries from students in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong. Zhou gets a chance to go to Japan to get more animation and commercial experience.
Zhou's teacher at CityU, Eddie Leung Hiu-ming, said he was impressed because Zhou used a medium she was less familiar with.

Developed by: Sung Fun Fun (Bella), Tsang Ka Lai (Kelly)
SIG: SIGAni+Vfx - Animation + Visual Effects
Year: 2010
Description: In our life, there are always separations. But we believe that separation doesn’t mean the end of a relationship. No matter people are staying together or not, somehow there is still some kind of connections or similarities between their lives. In this animation, we would like to use a retrospective approach to construct the lives of our two protagonists.
Our protagonists used to be lovers, but they were separated and then continued on their lives without each other. Their lives move along in parallel and in some circumstances their fates weave together. After many years, they meet coincidently. The story is all about life and love. We believe there are love, miracle and coincidence in our lives. Those are what we want to show in our animation.
